Colchester ran out comfortable winners to extend Bolton's losing start to the season.
Goals in each half from Tom Eastman and Jevani Brown sealed United's win, inflicting the Trotters' fourth straight defeat in all competitions.
Left-back Liam Gordon fired over early on for Bolton while, at the other end, Eastman drove wide.
Gethin Jones and Nathan Delfouneso also went close for the visitors, for whom Ali Crawford's low shot rattled a post.
But after Kwame Poku's low shot was saved by keeper Billy Crellin, Colchester struck in the 44th minute when Eastman headed firmly in unmarked after Brown had flicked on Cohen Bramall's corner.
Delfouneso curled a shot just wide and Eoin Doyle fired straight at keeper Dean Gerken before Colchester doubled their lead with 19 minutes remaining through Brown, who calmly lifted the ball past Crellin and in from the edge of the area after being picked out by Miles Welch-Hayes' fine through pass.
Brown missed a good chance before the end as Colchester nevertheless claimed victory.
