FA Cup: Hayes & Yeading 2-2 Carlisle United (3-4 pens) highlights

Fourth-tier Carlisle United squeaked past Southern League Premier Division South side Hayes & Yeading to reach the FA Cup second round on penalties, after two late extra-time goals spared them an early exit.

Jon Mellish struck twice in the last three minutes of the additional half-hour to cancel out goals from Omar Rowe and Amos Nasha following a goalless 90 minutes.

And having taken it to spot-kicks, the visitors snatched it 4-3 in sudden death after both teams missed two penalties apiece.

Jack Williams' kick was saved by Carlisle's Marcus Dewhurst, while Lewis Alessandra hit the post for the Cumbrians.

Dewhurst turned Keano Robinson's penalty onto the woodwork and Josh Kayode was denied by Jack Smith to take it to a knock-out.

Hayes & Yeading skipper Liam McDevitt hit the post, and Gavin Reilly dealt a cruel blow to the hosts when he slammed past Smith to ensure Carlisle's progress.

The League Two side ought not to have endured such a heart-stopping afternoon, having had plenty of chances to win it in normal time, notably when Joe Riley rattled the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the box in the first half.

The home side continued to live a charmed life in the second half as the Cumbrians racked up 20 shots on goal, with Reilly smacking the woodwork and Omari Patrick sweeping his shot over the bar.

It was not all one-way traffic despite Carlisle's assault on goal in the final 20 minutes, as Francis Amartey caused problems with his pace and only a last-ditch tackle halted his run forward in second-half injury time.

Rowe's sensational run created his opener in extra time, and when Nasha swivelled on the edge of the box and fired in, it looked like Paul Hughes' non-leaguers were on course for the second round for the first time.

Yet, Mellish's well-taken brace and the cruelty of the penalty shoot-out denied them, but they will rue the defensive lapses which let the club 73 places above them back into the game.
