Tyrese Campbell was the star as Stoke City edged out Huddersfield in a thrilling encounter.

Five of the seven goals came in a breathless 20-minute period in the first half, with Carel Eiting giving Huddersfield the lead before Campbell struck twice to put Stoke in front.

Isaac Mbenza levelled for the visitors but Stoke restored their lead when Campbell's cross was turned into his own net by Terriers defender Richard Stearman.

Sam Clucas fired into the top corner to stretch Stoke's advantage and although Naby Sarr pulled one back, Michael O'Neill's side held on.

After a cagey first quarter, the game exploded into life when Harry Toffolo's cross was superbly stroked into the bottom corner, first-time, by Eiting's left foot.

However, Campbell responded with a quickfire double, first pouncing on Danny Batth's knockdown to fire in and then slotting home after being fed by Steven Fletcher.

He almost got a hat-trick, too, but was denied by Terriers keeper Joel Pereira, which proved to be a crucial save as Huddersfield then equalised, Mbenza drilling home from Eiting's through ball.

But on the stroke of half-time, Campbell's cross left Stearman embarrassed as he tried to clear but only diverted into his own net and, after the break, Clucas drilled in a fourth from just inside the box.

Sarr nodded in from Mbenza's free-kick to give Huddersfield hope but Stoke saw the game out to move up to seventh, despite a nervy period of added-on time.

Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill told BBC Radio Stoke:

"We had to try and keep our shape because they like the game to be very open, with a little bit of chaos, and it's hard to keep control of the game at times in that situation.

"But we won the ball very well high up the pitch and created a lot of opportunities off the back of that.

"When you concede three at home, you'll always have disappointments - we'll look at the goals and see where we could be better, but ultimately we're scoring and creating and took the three points."

Huddersfield Town head coach Carlos Corberan told BBC Radio Leeds:

"We need to learn a lot from this.

"Football is not only about performing well - there are a lot of moments that we need to understand better the needs of the situation, depending on the minute of the game.

"For me, today, we helped the opponents in the first three goals that we conceded.

"I think we have lost a very good opportunity to add some more points. The team today had situations to take the three points."
