Fraizer Campbell's slip saw the ball loop over Marcus Bettinelli to complete a turnaround for Huddersfield before half-time
Josh Koroma's fine late goal, moments after Britt Assombalonga looked to have earned a point for Middlesbrough, sealed a dramatic Championship win for Huddersfield.
Boro captain Assombalonga scored from the spot after being brought down by Naby Sarr to make it 2-2 with seven minutes remaining.
But the Terriers went straight back in front through Koroma's excellent curling effort from inside the area, his fourth of the season.
Boro had taken a 14th-minute lead through Marvin Johnson, before Huddersfield's Carel Eiting and Fraizer Campbell made it 2-1 before half-time.
Visiting duo Assombalonga and Johnson were in the thick of the early action at the John Smith's Stadium, with the former guilty of spurning a fine chance to open the scoring after eight minutes.
But Johnson showed the striker how to do it shortly afterwards, finishing well past Ryan Schofield after latching onto Marcus Tavernier's through ball.

Marvin Johnson put Boro ahead with his fourth of the season
The Terriers responded well to going behind and Ajax loanee Eiting got them back on level terms after 37 minutes with his third goal in four games.
The turnaround was complete when Lewis O'Brien led a counter-attack and found Campbell in space. The striker slipped as he went to strike the ball but it still found its way past Marcus Bettinelli to make it 2-1 at the break.
Campbell went close to extending the lead early in the second half but fired wide, and Bettinelli also had to react smartly to save at the feet of the lively Koroma.
The game looked to be getting away from Neil Warnock's men but they were given a golden opportunity to claim a point when Sarr fouled Assombalonga in the penalty area.
He coolly slotted the spot-kick away but Boro celebrations were barely over when Koroma teased the visiting defenders, before making space to fire home the winner.
Terriers boss Carlos Corberan:
"Today we showed lots of character to dig in and win the three points.
"We didn't start well and we were facing a team with the least amount of goals conceded in the Championship so we knew it would be tough.
"But we went in front and we were comfortable in the second half. We then had a test of our character after the penalty but we came through against what was a physical side."
Boro manager Neil Warnock:
"The game should have been over after half an hour really. It was a big disappointment for us to go in 2-1 down at the break - it was a travesty. But silly mistakes led to their goals.
"We had so many opportunities to put the game to bed. And then when we did get it back to 2-2 they go down the other end and score again.
"But we made errors and when you make mistakes you get punished, like we have today."
