Barnsley 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers: Woodrow nets winner for Tykes
- Published
Barnsley registered a second win in three Championship games by beating struggling Wycombe Wanderers at Oakwell.
The Tykes took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Callum Styles sent a low left-footed shot across goal and into the bottom right-hand corner from inside the area.
Joe Jacobsen's penalty four minutes after the restart brought the visitors level after Aapo Halme had dragged down Garath McCleary.
McCleary then gave away a spot-kick when he tripped Luke Thomas, and Cauley Woodrow fired into the bottom left-hand corner to put Barnsley back in front.
Wycombe, in their first-ever campaign in the second tier, are now seven games without a win and remain two points from safety.
And Gareth Ainsworth's side drop a place to 23rd after Derby drew at Brentford, while Barnsley move up a spot to 16th.
The Tykes could have taken a fourth-minute lead but Woodrow failed to connect properly with a cut-back from Conor Chaplin.
Styles' fine low finish - his third goal of the campaign - gave the hosts a deserved half-time lead as the Chairboys failed to muster a shot on target in response.
Ryan Allsop made a fine save from Dominik Frieser to deny Barnsley a late third, but Valerien Ismael has now won six of his 10 games since taking charge of the South Yorkshire club in October, without a single draw.
Barnsley head coach Valerien Ismael told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I am delighted as it was very important to win this game against a direct opponent.
"In every game we have to find a solution.
"Our focus was to step up and not give them the opportunity to run in behind, and we did it very well.
"The guys got the reward for all their effort."
Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"We weren't at the races as much as we have been lately.
"For the last eight games we have been hugely competitive but sometimes it is a step too far with these fixture lists.
"Barnsley weren't great but played better stuff than us. The penalty was a bad one to concede but there are some real positives in there.
"We are gelling as a team and Garath McClearly is causing havoc up top. I am not going to dwell on this one too much."
