Ayr United and Raith Rovers missed the chance to draw level with second-top Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Championship after a goalless draw.

Rovers goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald saved well twice from Michael Moffat, then Innes Cameron, while an Aaron Muirhead header struck the visiting crossbar.

On-loan Aston Villa goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo parried clear a powerful drive from Rovers defender Kieran MacDonald.

Rovers stay third ahead of Ayr on goal difference and two points off the Pars.

Both sides had their moments of dominance, with Rovers playing the more impressive football but Ayr having the better of the chances.

Ayr remain unbeaten in six home games this season, while the Fifers have not won in three outings, although those were all against other sides in the top five.

Raith Rovers assistant manger Paul Smith: "I thought it was a good, open game and Jamie MacDonald had some fantastic saves for us. I don't think we started well, but we got into the game and played some good football, but it was just in the final third we let ourselves down."

Ayr United manager Mark Kerr: "I thought it was fair going on our first-half performance - I thought Raith Rovers were the better team. But, if Moff takes his chance, it might have been different. We went more attacking to try to win the game in the second half and we definitely had chances."
