Leyton Orient 2-1 Newport County: O's fight back to beat league leaders
- Published
Leaders Newport County were beaten for the first time in six League Two matches as Leyton Orient fought back to claim a 2-1 win.
Newport were on course for a third straight victory after Jamie Proctor's first-half goal.
But Orient levelled through Danny Johnson and completed the turnaround thanks to James Brophy's volley.
The hosts' second-half revival meant only a third league loss of the campaign for the Exiles.
Mike Flynn's team had been impressive in the first period and went in front when Proctor turned and fired a left-foot shot into the bottom corner of the net after a neat stepover from Scott Twine.
Proctor might have doubled his tally before half-time, and Newport were made to pay in the second half as their performance level dipped.
Orient had threatened through Josh Coulson by the time Johnson steered home his 13th goal of the season after Newport appeals for offside fell on deaf ears.
And Ross Embleton's side claimed their first win in three games as Brophy netted his second goal in four matches and Newport saw a late strike from Tristan Abrahams ruled out.
Orient's triumph means they climb into the play-off places, while Newport's lead at the top is three points.
Newport manager Mike Flynn:
"Second half we shot ourselves in the foot. The goals we gave away were really poor. Our distribution and choice of pass was poor and there was some really, really poor officiating.
"I am not going to beat myself over it. They know it wasn't good enough, but we should have had a point because the goal was disallowed and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is a very, very, very poor decision from the officials."
On the return of fans:
"I can understand sometimes why my players want to keep them away because some of the abuse the Leyton Orient fans were giving my players on the bench was awful, but hey-ho, we are all big enough to handle it."
