Adam Armstrong is the second-highest scorer in the Championship with 15 goals, one goal behind Brentford's Ivan Toney

Adam Armstrong's winner in the eighth minute of stoppage time saw Blackburn Rovers come from behind to beat struggling Rotherham United at Ewood Park.

Michael Smith's goal had put the Millers ahead, shooting home from the edge of the box having been put through by a header back towards the Rovers box.

Teenage Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott then equalised for Rovers with 10 minutes remaining when he blasted in left-footed from 10 yards out after Armstrong had played him in following some good control.

And, with the game apparently heading for a draw, Armstrong pounced from close range after a cross was headed back across the face of goal.

The Millers thought they had ended a six-game losing streak away from home before Armstrong broke their hearts with his 16th goal of the season in all competitions.

Rovers move up to 11th in the Championship table, while Rotherham remain in 20th place, outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

An uninspiring first half saw relatively few clear chances - Smith went close for Rotherham, while Joe Rothwell forced a save from Viktor Johansson.

After Smith's opener, Matt Crooks curled a low left-footed effort just wide with 15 minutes to go after cutting inside from the left wing as the Millers almost went further ahead.

Having levelled Rovers thought they had won it in the final minute, but Amari'i Bell's headed goal was ruled out for offside.

Rotherham themselves almost took all three points in the sixth minute of stoppage time, but Freddie Ladapo hit the side-netting and seconds later his side were beaten.

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"There's improvement there for us, they can see that, I can see that, I think we have to move the ball quicker.

"I don't think the pitch is helping us at the moment, a few of the players have mentioned the pitch to me. There were a few examples tonight that if we were trying to move the ball really quickly it's difficult on a surface that doesn't help you do that.

"But football's all about the result isn't it? I would have sat here with a 1-0 defeat and told you we weren't good enough, we couldn't break them down, we didn't create enough chances, we gave them a goal, and yet I'm not, I'm talking about a 2-1 win."

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"It's always cruel when you lose in the last few seconds, obviously it's difficult to take and I'm still very raw emotionally about it, as are all the lads in the dressing room.

"But it's even worse when you've played so well, I thought we stopped the switch very well, the lads gave everything physically and we created the best chances.

"We had gilt-edged chances in the second half, and if we don't take them then one goal isn't possibly going to be enough.

"Overall I'm hugely disappointed beyond words really, but I'm also very proud of the way we played."
