Morton captain Jim McAlister retired after the match

Jack Hamilton made a scoring start to his loan at Arbroath by heading the winner against Morton in Greenock.

The Livi striker lifted the visitors off the foot of the table with his 11th of the season after brilliant work and a delightful cross by Jason Thomson.

Morton's chances were few but Craig McGuffie did go close with a scissor kick in the first half.

Late on Ton captain Jim McAlister came on as substitute in what is his final game before retiring as a player.

The midfielder made his Morton debut in 2002 and went on to make 361 appearances for the Greenock side.

Morton manager Anton McElhone: "I am disappointed we couldn't send the skipper away with three points. Jim's got a young family and football's uncertain. He's looking at securing something with longevity and certainty.

"Anybody would understand him looking after his family in this climate. It's nothing to do with what's happening at the club. We're hoping to bring in a back up goalkeeper and someone to help us in the final third of the pitch."

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "It was a great goal worthy of winning a game. I'm more happy for Jason Thomson though because I gave him a rollicking at half-time for not getting forward and putting a cross in. The chateau-du-Pape will be out tonight!"
