FA Cup: Bristol City 2-1 Portsmouth highlights
Chris Martin's late winner took Bristol City through to the FA Cup fourth round after a tough test against Portsmouth.
Famara Diedhiou rifled a fine shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to put City ahead.
Andy Cannon's tenacious run and cutback teed up the unmarked Callum Johnson to side-foot an equaliser.
Pompey threatened an upset, with keeper Daniel Bentley saving Tom Naylor's effort, but Martin's powerful strike from 20 yards out settled the tie.
The Robins had gone 12 days without a match, while Pompey took to the pitch for the first time since 18 December after positive Covid-19 tests and then a frozen pitch at Accrington Stanley.
The hosts welcomed back Fulham loanee Alfie Mawson into their defence after more than two and a half months out with a knee injury, and they started on the front foot.
Visiting goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray denied Martin from close range before Diedhiou's individual moment of class saw Pompey concede for the first time in six matches.
Portsmouth, who went into the tie with just one defeat in 10 games, recovered well and worked themselves into promising positions, but without testing home Bentley until Johnson levelled right on half-time.
Antoine Semenyo directed a first-time shot straight at McGillivray from 12 yards out, but City created little in the second half as the visitors gradually took charge.
A neat one-two played in Tom Naylor, whose firm goalbound strike was turned away well by Bentley, who then saved again from Naylor and Michael Jacobs as the League One promotion chasers turned up the heat.
Defender Taylor Moore twice snuffed out further moments of danger with last-ditch tackles, but with Kenny Jackett's side pushing for the winner, Martin struck against the run of play to put the Robins back in front.
It was cruel on the visitors, who were left cursing their luck once more when Bentley pulled off a point-blank stop to deny Jordy Hiwula a last-gasp equaliser.
Bristol City head coach Dean Holden told BBC Radio Bristol:
"I thought some of our play was excellent in the first half, had some cutting edge to it but we just couldn't get that second goal.
"The equaliser gave us something to do at half-time and it was a tough ask in the second half, we gave the ball away cheaply too many times.
"The objective was to get through, that's why I went strong with the team, and I'm delighted we're in the draw."
Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett:
"We have caused a very good Championship side a lot of problems today, but that is no good if you don't turn pressure into goals.
"The difference was in the quality of the finishing.
"We are disappointed to lose a game in which our approach play was so good.
"A mixture of brave defending, good saves and failure to take our chances has cost us.
"Bentley's save at the end was a really good one because Jordy struck his shot well."
