More from Rory McIlroy on the massed ranks supporting him around Royal Portrush:

"Absolutely incredible. I feel the support of an entire country out there, which is a wonderful position to be in, but at the same time, you don't want to let them down. So there's that little bit of added pressure.

"I felt like I dealt with it really well today. Certainly dealt with it better than I did six years ago. I was just happy to get off to a good start and get myself into the tournament.

"I didn't feel like I was walking into the unknown this time around, where last time I hadn't experienced that before. I hadn't played an Open at home. I didn't know how I was going to feel. I didn't know the reaction I was going to get, where this time I had a better idea of what was going to be coming my way."

  7. 'Really happy with where I am'published at 21:29 British Summer Time 17 July

Rory McIlroy, speaking after a one-under opening round:

"It was good. I had it going at three under through 10 and let a few slip there around the middle of the round. I steadied the ship well, played the last four at one under, and it was nice to shoot under par.

"It was a tough enough day, especially either chopping out of the rough or out of the fairway bunkers most of the time. So to shoot under par was a good effort.

"I'm surprised four-under is leading. I thought someone might have gone out there and shot 6 or 7 today. Only three back with 54 holes to go, I'm really happy with where I am."

  9. English finishes off with parpublished at 21:21 British Summer Time 17 July

    English -4 (67)

A classy day at the office for America's Harris English as he cosies up his lengthy birdie putt and then tucks in for par.

He makes it a five-way tie at the top overnight.

Justin Rose finished with a two under par, and was speaking to BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra:

On being one of only three players at the moment to have gone bogey-free: "Two under par is a good round of golf and I felt like we maybe got the best of it for the middle of our round. Conditions were quite scoreable and then the last couple of hours of the day it felt like the wind picked up.

"It began to feel like you were just trying to get it into the clubhouse. It was nine o’clock at night, you’re just trying to keep your focus going, it definitely got blustery so all in all very happy to keep the card clean and shoot in the 60s."

On the length of the round: "I don’t really why that is to be honest with you. I know there was a ruling on seven, someone lost a ball – that can happen and you get a little backlog of two or three groups on the tee box.

"It’s a major championship. It is blistery, it is tricky. I feel there’s not may tap in pars and go. There’s a lot of four-five footers, guys are reading it, marking their putts. There’s a lot of grinding going on which takes a while."

On the crowd support: "That’s probably the fullest I’ve seen a grandstand at nine o’clock at night on a Thursday or a Friday so every credit to the crowd for sticking around, They were amazing to play in front of."

  11. 'Like to give myself a chance'published at 21:19 British Summer Time 17 July

Tyrrell Hatton speaking after a three-under round of 68: "t was a good day. I'm happy with how I played out there. It was pretty tricky at times, and certainly the last three, four holes the wind really picked up.

"I really enjoyed having a chance to win in Oakmont [at the US Open]. I know it didn't go my way in the end, but I left that week proud of how I dealt with everything, happy with how I managed myself in the most pressure moments. Yeah, taking confidence from that, and hoping that this week - even if it's not that week, I'd like to down the line give myself a chance to win another major.

"I've played in enough now. This is my 42nd, and 13th Open. I've played a lot, so it would be nice to give myself some more chances."

    English -4 (17)

Well well, Harris English will have a (slim) opportunity on the 18th green to seize the outright lead after day one.

The hordes who waited for Rory McIlroy have finished but there are still a good number of hardy punters in the grandstand to greet the American.

His approach shot leaves 46 feet for birdie.

  13. Fairway to go for Rorypublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy -1 (70)

Rory McIlroy hit just two fairways today, the fewest in his Open career and joint fewest of any round at a major.

That's his superpower - but it shows what he can do with the clubs in the rest of his bag.

The question is whether he can get his driver to behave over the next three days.

Stat graphic that reads 5: Every Open winner this century has been within five shots of the lead after 18 holes

So Rory McIlroy is comfortably in contention - as are 73 other players on an increasingly bunched leaderboard.

One over par would also be the cut line as things stand.

Plenty to play for after day one.

  16. 'Definitely a round of everything for McIlroy'published at 21:04 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy -1 (70)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

It definitely was a round of everything. Rory McIlroy will be pretty happy with one under.

He didn’t drive it well, but he had lots of good stuff in there. Just a little sloppy in places.

If he can just tighten up the driving, the rest of the game looks in good shape.

    Andy Gray

There's a famous wee fairground in Portrush and it's been another Rory rollercoaster today.

It's no surprise he got the loudest cheer on the 18th with chants of 'Rory! Rory! Rory!'.

His last walk up here at the Open was an emotional one as he narrowly missed the cut six years ago.

It's been an up and down opening round, but he's in touch with the lead and I'm sure he'll sleep better tonight than he did after his first round in 2019.

  19. McIlroy shoots 70 to finish one underpublished at 21:02 British Summer Time 17 July

    McIlroy -1, Thomas +1, Fleetwood +2 (18)

"Get in the hole!" roar a couple of fans, but Rory McIlroy comes up just short with a lengthy putt for birdie at the 18th. He has to settle for par and finishes the day with a one-under round of 70.

Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood finish with pars as well.

  20. Par for Englishpublished at 20:59 British Summer Time 17 July

    English -4 (17)

It's not a birdie for Harris English down 17 but it's a very comfortable par.

He'll have one last hole to pick up the shot he needs for the solo lead.
