Newport County missed the opportunity to go top of League Two after a drab draw against Salford City.

The hosts were reduced to 10-men on the hour mark when Wales midfielder Josh Sheehan was shown a red card for a two-footed challenge on Ash Hunter.

Newport had already lost defender Ryan Haynes in the first half to a head injury.

Both sides had few chances of note with Salford's Tom Clarke coming closest with a header which went wide.

Salford were under the watchful eye of co-owner Gary Neville with manager Richie Wellens absent with a chest infection.

Newport finish the day in second spot while Salford are fifth having played two games more than the top two sides.

Newport County manager Michael Flynn said:

"We weren't good enough in the first half, After the first 10-15 minutes, Salford got on top a little bit without creating anything. First half I thought Salford were the better team.

"In the second half I thought we started ok and then got a red card. If it was a red card then I think football's in trouble because they might as well say anything you go to the floor, then it's illegal.

"That level of officiating performance was way, way below the standard required for a professional league in English football."
