Chesterfield 2-1 Wrexham: Akwasi Asante double delights Spireites

  • Published

Akwasi Asante had the first and last say to hand Chesterfield a deserved late win at home to Wrexham.

Chesterfield went ahead early when a defensive mix-up allowed Asante to poke in from close range.

Wrexham were level when a handball against Jak McCourt allowed Luke Young to score from the penalty spot.

Spireites' Marcus Dinanga hit the bar while Dragons' Jordan Ponticelli went close, but Asante struck again from Liam Mandeville's incisive pass.

Wrexham manager Dean Keates told the club website:

"It was massively frustrating. In possession we didn't move it or keep it well enough.

"In the second half we got pinned back in, defended okay at points, but the sheer volume of opportunities for them in our final third, it was too much.

"(The problem) is mindset, mentality. The goal we've conceded is a mistake, the early stages of a game - no matter what level you play at - the first 20 minutes you're working yourselves in a bit like a boxing match."
