Aidan Nesbitt fires in the only goal of the night

Morton moved up to sixth in the Scottish Championship after Aidan Nesbitt scored the only goal away to Inverness Caley Thistle.

Nesbitt drilled home an angled shot after 56 minutes to end a run of 10 games without a win for the Greenock side.

The hosts struggled to create openings but went close when Shane Sutherland hit the crossbar late on.

Nikolay Todorov also thumped a shot against the post in the first half.

Caley Thistle, now winless in five outings, drop to second bottom but are just two points behind Morton in a congested table.

The home side had most of the possession on a windy and rainy evening but were fortunate not to fall behind when Kazaiah Sterling glanced a close-range header wide.

Morton goalkeeper Aidan McAdams then made a fine fingertip save to deny Roddy Macgregor before Todorov hit the frame of the goal near half-time.

Nesbitt banged in the decisive strike after the restart, shooting across Mark Ridgers and into the bottom corner.

A Brian McLean header flew just over as Morton threatened a second goal before drama on the 89th minute when Sutherland's effort struck the crossbar and Todorov was offside as he knocked in the rebound.

Inverness Caley Thistle caretaker manager Neil McCann: "I'm really hurting because it was a winnable game but Morton looked like they wanted it more - and that's a huge criticism. There's no excuse when you cross the white line not to have the same application as the opposition.

"With all of the games being shoehorned in, it's difficult to train the players without fatiguing them, so they will be tired bouncing from game to game but we can't do anything about that because we still have to prepare."

Morton manager Anton McElhone: "You're always one game away from disaster and one game away from glory in this league, it's so tight.

"Tonight, the guys had the mentality to see it through and hopefully that will give them a bit more confidence to push on for the next eight games."
