Exeter earned a point at Rodney Parade despite playing over half the match reduced to nine men.

The Grecians suffered a nightmare start when Alex Hartridge was sent off for bringing down Nicky Maynard with the striker bearing down on goal.

The 10-men took the lead through Ryan Bowman but he went from hero to villain as a clash with Mickey Demetriou on 43 minutes saw him sent off.

Exeter defended an onslaught before Dom Telford headed Newport level late on.

Newport are fifth in League Two after the draw, three points off the automatic promotion berths, while Exeter are seventh and in the play-off spots.

Newport assistant manager Wayne Hatswell told BBC Sport Wales:

"We are disappointed, a lack of quality, the effort was there but we just couldn't score.

"The longer it went on the more it looked like we wouldn't score, but we got a good cross in, in the end.

"The way the pitch it, is becomes a leveller. It's just the way it is... it is so tough to score on that pitch.

"They got a chance and put it away and it gave them something to cling on to. They defended well, we are disappointed but at the end we will say it is a point gained, it might prove a decent point."
