Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett will not attend matches or training from Thursday while he rests and recovers from an operation.

Former Wales international and Swansea and Wolves boss Jackett, 59, is due to have a mole removed from his forearm.

Assistant manager Joe Gallen will take charge in a caretaker capacity alongside first-team coach Jake Wigley.

Jackett is still expected to be on the touchline for Pompey's League One trip to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday.

"The information I've been given is I will need about two weeks' rest and recuperation after the operation," Jackett told BBC Radio Solent.

"It's a big period for us and it's both precautionary and elective surgery on my part.

"I've explained it to the players that I have to try and minimise the effect it has on them in terms of their preparation.

"In terms of myself, I feel very positive and confident in the procedure ahead."

Portsmouth are fourth in the table, a point off the automatic promotion places with two games in hand.

After Tuesday's trip to Rovers, they are scheduled to play three league games in eight days, hosting Blackpool and Gillingham on the next two Saturdays (20 and 27 February), with an away match at Oxford United next Tuesday, 23 February.

Jackett has also brought in former team-mate and Swansea assistant Nigel Gibbs to assist Gallen and Wigley in his absence.

He expects to be able to address the team before, during and after matches via video link during his recovery.

Fellow League One manager Steve Cotterill has been doing similar with Shrewsbury Town while he continues his recovery in hospital from coronavirus.

"The technology is there and we're all using things like Zoom on a regular basis now," Jackett added.

"It won't be too dissimilar to that situation. It's an incredible run Shrewsbury have been on lately and I certainly don't hope to be out as long as Steve has sadly had to be."
