Newport and Walsall had drawn 1-1 at Rodney Parade in the reverse fixture in November

Captain Joss Labadie's header secured victory over Walsall and kick-started Newport County's promotion campaign.

Labadie's header from Ryan Haynes' cross 19 minutes from time gave the Exiles only their second win in 13 league games.

Nicky Maynard and Dom Telford had both had chances for Michael Flynn's side.

Nick Townsend denied Walsall's Max Melbourne late in the game and ensure a much needed win for County, who moved up to sixth in League Two.

Newport County manager Michael Flynn said:

"It still wasn't quite as sharp as I'd wanted in the final third but some of the football we played was superb.

"It's been tough and it's been frustrating but we all keep believing and working hard and that's the only way you get out of it.

"It's a nice three points and thoroughly deserved."
