Newport County moved above 10-man Morecambe with a 3-1 away win to boost their hopes of League Two promotion.

The Exiles are up to fourth after goals from Matt Dolan, Josh Sheehan and 42-year old Kevin Ellison.

Morecambe, who drop to sixth, equalised through Yann Songo'o, but saw Samuel Lavelle sent off on 38 minutes for a professional foul on Ryan Taylor.

Dolan put Newport ahead with a penalty before Sheehan restored the lead and Ellison scored against his former club.

Newport County manager Michael Flynn said:

"I thought we were excellent even when they had 11 men. They're a dangerous team, they can score, got good players and are full of confidence. It's an important three points.

"We've got a long way to go and there's going to be bumps along the way. Teams are going to go on good runs of form so we've just got to worry about ourselves and see where it takes.

"We've got to keep going, giving it our best shot and take one game at a time."
