Dunfermline Athletic moved second in the Scottish Championship as Craig Wighton made amends for a penalty miss by netting the winner against Morton.

The striker headed home Dom Thomas' cross a minute before half-time to condemn Gus MacPherson to a losing start as Morton interim boss.

Wighton had a spot-kick saved by Aidan McAdams, after being fould by the goalkeeper, and fired the rebound over.

Dunfermline are 15 points behind Hearts with two games in hand.

The hosts had further chances through Thomas and Scott Banks, with Aidan Nesbitt coming closest to a Morton equaliser.

The Greenock side stay sixth but are just a point clear of second-bottom Arbroath.

Dunfermline manager Stevie Crawford: "We faced a very difficult two weeks and dealt with everything in a respectable manner and worked alongside the SFA and government over Covid issues.

"We had to adapt training, but credit to the boys and the importance of getting three points to get back to second place was massive."

Morton interim manager Gus MacPherson: "We asked questions, but Dunfermline are a good team and well organised and they made it difficult for us to break them down.

"It was late Thursday morning I was introduced to the players - hopefully the full week to prepare next week will make the difference."
