Championship strugglers Wycombe Wanderers beat out-of-form Blackburn Rovers to keep alive their slim hopes of survival.

In a first half of few chances, Uche Ikpeazu came closest for the hosts as he saw an effort inside the box well blocked by Rovers.

Wycombe went in front soon after the break when Fred Onyedinma headed home inside the six yard box from Joe Jacobson's inswinging corner.

Joe Rothwell came close to finding a dramatic late equaliser for Blackburn but he was well denied by Chairboys goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Wanderers chances of avoiding an immediate return to League One still look bleak despite recording their seventh victory of the season.

Gareth Ainsworth's side stay bottom of the Championship table, eight points behind Birmingham City in 21st, with seven games remaining.

Blackburn remain 15th but have now won just once in their past 13 Championship matches.

One sour note for Wycombe saw Dominic Gape stretchered off early on, but they kept their focus to capitalise on some poor defending as Onyedinma scored his fourth goal of the season to give them a chance of remaining in the division.

Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"We probably surprised a few people. We changed up our style and formation a little bit and I thought it worked a treat in the first half as we caused them no end of problems.

"There were some fantastic performances for some individuals. For two weeks we worked on changing what we want to be and I think that paid dividends today.

"It's a big result but we won't get carried away. We stay in the hunt and stay right in the pack of the relegation scrap which is brilliant. People will be looking at Wycombe thinking 'are they dead and buried?' Absolutely no chance. We'll be scrapping and fighting no matter what happens."

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"Ultimately we're left disappointed and frustrated. We've lost lots of games this season 1-0. We're all disappointed to have lost to a team like Wycombe.

"I'd like to give Wycombe lots of credit for their spirit and fight and togetherness. They scored from a set play which is a big strength of theirs and it's a credit to them that they are competing in this league.

"For us, we have to find that quality in the final third because we've had too many 1-0 defeats and games where we have plenty of the ball but we don't do enough with it."
