Sam Sherring scored a stoppage-time winner as Torquay boosted their automatic promotion hopes with a crucial victory at Wrexham.

Sherring's strike secured a second successive win after victory against Woking on Good Friday.

Defeat was tough on Wrexham who had created plenty of chances and a second defeat of the Easter weekend dealt a blow to their own play-off hopes.

Dean Keates' side drop out of the play-off spots while Torquay remain third.

Torquay are six points behind leaders Sutton United with 11 games of the season remaining.

The Gulls began on the front foot and early opportunities saw Adam Randell fire over the crossbar from distance and Armani Little's shot saved by Christian Dibble, a late replacement after Rob Lainton suffered an injury during the warm-up.

Wrexham had spent the opening 15 minutes camped in their own half but Dior Angus broke free and drew a save from Lucas Covolan.

It was the start of a good spell for the home side with Jordan Davies' free-kick rattling the crossbar and a Jamie Reckord shot well saved by Covolan.

Both sides were playing their part in an entertaining contest with Torquay finishing the first half in the same way as they had started, with Asa Hall testing Dibble from 20 yards.

Gulls full-back Ben Wynter flashed a shot wide of the post during the opening minutes of the second half while Davies had a header cleared off the Torquay line.

Covolan dived low to parry Hall-Johnson's long range effort and the goalkeeper also made excellent saves to deny Jay Harris and Fiacre Kelleher.

But it was Torquay who finally broke the deadlock in added time at the end of the game as Wrexham failed to clear and Sherring struck to claim a vital win for Gary Johnson's side.

Wrexham manager Dean Keates said:

"Another tough one to take. We've hit the post, hit the crossbar, had one cleared off the line and the keeper's had the majority of saves to make and we got caught by the second phase of a long throw.

"It was scrappy but we did more than enough to get something out of the game and in the end if we had got a point I would probably have been saying how disappointing we hadn't got three.

"We should have seen the game out and we've got to learn from it."
