Newport took a big step in securing their place in the play-offs with a convincing win which leaves Scunthorpe hovering above the drop zone.

County went ahead when Padraig Amond's cross was headed into his own net by George Taft.

Mickey Demetriou's powerful header and Lewis Collins' first goal for the club gave them a 3-0 interval lead.

Demetriou's second headed goal, from Matty Dolan's free-kick, sealed victory with five minutes remaining.

Michael Flynn's Newport are sixth after securing back-to-back wins at home for the first time since November and a draw against Cheltenham on Saturday would secure a play-off spot if other results go their way.

Scunthorpe's fifth successive defeat leaves them six points clear of the bottom two but not mathematically safe from relegation with two games remaining.

Newport County manager Michael Flynn said:

"I thought in the first half we were absolutely outstanding. We created, made some good runs and we forced them into basically sitting off because they couldn't get the ball off us.

"In saying I thought in the second half we were a bit sloppier at times and if we do that against Cheltenham on Saturday we'll get punished.

"Until it's mathematically impossible for us to be caught then I won't be getting carried away."
