Bolton went through to the second round of the Carabao Cup after beating Championship side Barnsley on penalties following a goalless draw.
After eight successful kicks, Tykes striker Devante Cole's effort was saved by Joel Dixon and Josh Sheehan scored the winner for the League One side.
The visitors had the better of the chances in the first half but Victor Adeboyejo sent his effort wide of the post when well placed to score.
Bolton nearly won it in the final minute when Sheehan forced a save from Jack Walton but Amadou Bakayoko could only head the rebound over the crossbar.
