Alex Fisher marked his first start for Newport County with the winning goal at Tranmere Rovers.
Tranmere almost took the lead when Priestley Farquharson nearly diverted Sam Foley's cross into his own net, but Joe Day tipped it over the crossbar.
Fisher had already rattled the Tranmere bar with a volley, but the striker made no mistake with a close-range strike after the break.
Day kept the Exiles in the lead with a low save to keep out Nevitt's header.
Newport's victory came under the guidance of assistant Wayne Hatswell, standing in for manager Michael Flynn after he tested positive for Covid-19.
Newport striker Alex Fisher told BBC Sport Wales:
"It was certainly pretty physical out there today, they've got a strong side.
"It was one of those where we felt once we got a foothold in the game it was good to see it off with a goal, because often those games can fall away from you.
"It was a nice game to play in and it could be a big three points in the context of the rest of the season."
