Jake Beesley put Rochdale ahead from the penalty spot after being fouled by Pennington in the 67th minute.
Danny Cashman doubled their lead 10 minutes later, finishing Alex Newby's cross with a strong close-range header.
The match was goalless until the sending off, with Rochdale capitalising on their man advantage.
