Forest Green Rovers lost their place at the top of League Two after an entertaining goalless draw at Exeter City.

Forest Green should have been ahead inside the opening eight minutes as first Kane Wilson brought a fine save out of Cameron Dawson before a stretching Jamille Matt put the ball wide in front of an open goal Dan Sweeney had headed back a cross.

Both sides looked to play expansive attacking football, with Exeter's wide players Jake Caprice and Josh Key looking dangerous before Matt glanced a header over the Exeter bar from a Cadden cross eight minutes before the break.

Regan Hendry's long-range left-footed effort grazed the foot of the Exeter post in the 44th minute, while Sam Nombe almost put City ahead after breaking from the resulting goal kick, but Rovers goalkeeper Luke McGee bravely saved at the strikers' feet as an entertaining first half ended goalless.

The home fans almost celebrated an opener after an hour when Nombe broke through after Matt Jay's flicked pass, but the striker's low effort curled just past the far post, while at the other end Matt beat the offside trap but had a low effort blocked by Dawson two minutes later.

Rovers fans thought they were celebrating a winner with 15 minutes left when Baily Cargill pounced on a Pierce Sweeney mistake, but the defender volleyed wide of the far post.

Harrogate Town leapfrog Forest Green at the top of the table on goal difference after a 3-1 win at Mansfield Town, while Exeter slip to 13th place after six games.
