Sunderland eased past fellow League One side Wigan to reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.
Nathan Broadhead gave the visitors the lead with a composed finish after drifting in off the left edge of the area.
Luke O'Nien slid home a measured effort after some neat passing to put the visitors in total control.
The Latics, who are above the Black Cats at the top of the table on goal difference, created little of note.
Unsurprisingly both teams made a large number of changes from the weekend action, with the home team making nine alterations to Sunderland's eight.
Lee Johnson's men, who conceded late on to throw away two points at Fleetwood on Saturday, were dominant throughout and showed clinical finishing for both goals.
Broadhead, who is on a season-long loan from Everton, showed his class to open the scoring before O'Nien made the result safe with an equally assured finish.
Wigan, whose best chance saw Curtis Tilt's shot blocked by Bailey Wright, return to league action with a home game against Cheltenham on Saturday while Sunderland entertain Bolton.
Wigan boss Leam Richardson:
"First and foremost, that certainly wasn't the result we wanted.
"But on the flip side, there were a lot of lads who needed 90 minutes, and the bench was full of academy graduates.
"We know the campaign is going to be so tough, with so many three-game weeks on the way."
Sunderland boss Lee Johnson:
"It was so good, I'm really happy. It showed how hard these players have worked in training that we looked so fluid.
"I thought the second-half performance was outstanding. We had total control, and I hardly felt we were in any danger.
"The thing is, we can only get better. We haven't peaked, nowhere near."
