  1. 'A legend of English football'published at 23:15 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

I'll leave you with this... who is Man City boss Pep Guardiola speaking about here in reference to his young defenders?

"They faced a legend of English football, it was an absolute pleasure to meet him.

"It's not easy to do it but they did very well."

The answer: Mr Adebayo Akinfenwa. I think that's another thing to add to the big man's Wikipedia page.

    Night all.

  2. 'Thank you to the academy'published at 23:13 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Man City 6-1 Wycombe

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola: "I am just going to say thank you very much to all the academy.

"They have many good players, not just one or two. All of them are incredibly well-educated people. Thanks to their families. We have talented players. We can count on them absolutely.

"With their skills and desire, they got it at this club. I am so proud to be manager of this club.

"Phil Foden was injured for two months after the national team. Phil doesn't need many games to get his rhythm because he lives for football 24 hours a day. He is sharp."

  3. '10 out of 10'published at 23:11 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Brentford 7-0 Oldham

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank: "I'm really pleased with the performance and the attitude was bang on from the first second, and not only because we scored after three minutes.

"We kept going throughout the game, throughout the 90 minutes, which says a lot about the mentality of these players, and then we scored some fantastic goals.

"Marcus (Forss) is doing all he can every day in training, and he's a really good player.

"He scored four really good goals. I guess that needs to be a 10 out of 10."

  4. 'We missed a lot of chances'published at 23:11 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Watford 1-3 Stoke

    Watford

Watford boss Xisco Munoz: "Our first idea was to continue with the cup, this was our objective. These games sometimes happen and today was the day."

"Today is incredible. The game was perfect (for them)...the goalkeeper saved incredible balls, we hit the post, we missed the chances.

"Sometimes that happens in football and we need to keep going and the positive thing is that we worked really well today and we missed a lot of chances - but sometimes that is football.

"In the second half we played the complete game, had control of the game and I don't know how many chances in the second half.

"I think today only we can say that it was an incredible game because I have no other words about this."

  5. 'We showed all sides of our character'published at 23:11 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Watford 1-3 Stoke

    Stoke City

Stoke boss Michael O'Neill: "I'm delighted it was a really good performance, we showed all sides of our character throughout today.

"We knew we would come under pressure in the second half, which was the case, but once they levelled we showed a great reaction - we had to defend for 10 or 15 minutes but then we came into the game again.

"It gives me a headache, it's a nice headache to have. We get a chance now we're going into another three games in six days and we have to make sure that we take the application we saw tonight and the attitude, into the game - league games are always a different proposition but we take a lot from tonight's game."

  6. 'We wanted to win the Cup'published at 23:09 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Daniel Farke: "We wanted to win the Carabao Cup and now we can't.

"I am disappointed with this. I know how much I measure this cup and I would like to win but we also had to be smart in our team selection and rest some players.

"Overall I was pleased with our performance. We created so many situations but we were unable to convert our key chances."

  7. 'Footballers want to play'published at 23:09 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Norwich 0-3 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Takumi Minamino: "Footballers want to play, that's clear. He was with his national team, got injured and was then not fit so it was not like he didn't play for 60 weeks.

"It was the time after the injury but Taki is in a really good moment, training well and deserved the two goals.

"The first was quick in the mind and he finished it off well. The second I didn't see but he got into the box and in pre-season he was really good, then he got injured on international duty but now he is back."

On the game: "We started well, really aggressive and then you can see we didn't train that much, had to make late decisions and this is where the last line and goalie saved us in these moments.

"But we managed to score the second, then the third and controlled the game. The kids did exceptionally well, all three physically strong and maybe the biggest surprise was they could all go 90 minutes. I'm really happy for them because it was a big moment."

  10. 'We deserved something more'published at 23:05 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

Fulham 0-0 Leeds (Leeds win 6-5 on pens)

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva: "When I made 11 changes in the starting XI and I saw our team match our opponent like we did this evening - of course I'm not happy with the result - like all of us I think we deserved something more from the game.

"But the result is what it is, but we have to be proud of our players and what they did and how they played for the 95 minutes, with very good intensity in some moments of the game.

"Unfortunately in the penalties they were more competent than us, because for me it's not just a matter of luck or not.

"But I'm proud of what we did and our players. The ball went to the crossbar of the post and we lost in penalties as well, but by working the way that we are doing and the way that we will keep doing, the good moments will come for us."

  11. Quite a day for new dad Jamespublished at 23:00 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Fulham 0-0 Leeds (5-6 pens)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Leeds winger Dan James tells BBC Radio 5 Live: “We wanted to win in normal time, as a team we created enough chances, but going straight to penalties. Full credit to the boys for putting them away. I remember my first penalty shootout, it is nerve-wracking, not easy easily with the home fans and you have to believe it is going to go in.

“You always get nerves but you have to relish it. When it goes in the back of the net it feels a lot better.

“My baby boy was born this afternoon, thank you to the manager for letting me be in Manchester for that. Absolutely amazing day for me and the Mrs, so proud of her and it was a late one, something we could not change. The manager let me do it so I was able to be there for the birth of my baby and come to the game tonight.

“He was born just after 12, the car would have been a bit too long so I ended up getting a helicopter. A bit of an amazing story and one I will always remember. We don’t have a name yet and will think of a name when we get home.”

  12. 'Young players showed character'published at 22:54 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

Fulham 0-0 Leeds (Leeds win 6-5 on pens)

    Leeds United

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa: "It was difficult for us. We conceded too many chances to the opponent. It was difficult for all our players."

On Stuart McKinstry and Joe Gelhardt: "They showed personality and character. Gelhardt had missed his last two penalties and took on board the responsibility and managed to score and McKinstry also had to take one in the most decisive moments and they showed character."

  14. 'They dug in and came up trumps'published at 22:41 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Preston 4-1 Cheltenham

Preston boss Frankie McAvoy: “The task was to get in to the next round and the lads have done that tonight so credit to them. It wasn’t easy but we knew that would be the case.

“I said at half-time, let’s not get complacent and we need to go and get that third goal. Unfortunately they got their goal but credit to our players, they have dug in again and come up trumps.

“It was great to see the front two scoring the last two goals. That will be great for their confidence.

"Sean Maguire has done really well. He has had to work really hard, he is the guy holding the jersey and I’m absolutely delighted for him. I knew it was only a matter of time before he got a goal, hopefully this is just the start for him.”

  16. 'We had enough chances to win the game'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

QPR 2-2 Everton (QPR win 8-7 on pens)

    Everton

Everton boss Rafa Benitez, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think we did quite well. We had 17 attempts away from home. We fight back twice so we showed character and attitude. But still we have to be better in both areas. We concede too easily and missed chances that made a difference in the game.

"You cannot say too much because the team was working so hard. We had enough chances to win the game. We were pushing all the time.

"Hopefully, it will be just a bit tiredness and we will see (with injuries). The players gave everything on the pitch."

  17. 'Scenes when goal went in were incredible'published at 22:23 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Man City 6-1 Wycombe

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth: “The first 22 minutes were special! What a moment for the fans who travelled all this way.

"A few months ago they were locked in their homes and couldn’t see us in the Championship. Those scenes when the goal went in were incredible.

“Congratulations to Man City and thanks for welcoming us the way you have. We couldn’t cope with them at times and we owe them a lot of respect. I hope they go on and win it, and for us, we turn our attentions to getting three points at MK Dons.”

As you expect in these Carabao Cup early-round ties, we've had some big scorelines tonight, at Brentford, Burnley, Manchester City and Preston. And we even had a couple of shocks too, with QPR knocking Everton out on penalties and Stoke beating Watford.

There were also shootouts at Fulham (won by Leeds) and at Sheffield United (won by visitors Southampton).

All in all, a fine night of Carabao Cup action.
