Manchester United captain Harry Maguire and Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold are set to miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary because of injuries.
Centre-back Maguire is facing a "few weeks" out with a calf injury, says United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He will be absent for Wednesday's Champions League match against Villarreal after limping off in the Premier League defeat by Aston Villa.
Alexander-Arnold has a groin issue.
The Liverpool right-back did not travel to Porto for their 5-1 victory in the Champions League on Tuesday and is expected to miss the Premier League match against rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
"Obviously when you have something with your muscle, it's not likely for Sunday - no muscle injury heals that quick," said manager Jurgen Klopp.
"After that, it's internationals. I don't want to make the decision for him but what I heard, I don't think it will be possible for him to be with the national team."
On Maguire, Solskjaer added: "Harry is more or less definitely out. It doesn't look good. It's his calf. That might take a few weeks, so let's see how quickly he recovers. .
"Of course he was hoping to play against Villarreal - he missed the last game we played against them [in the Europa League final in May]."
England manager Gareth Southgate will announce his Three Lions squad on Thursday.
Southgate's team travel to Andorra on Saturday, 9 October and host Hungary on Tuesday, 12 October.
