Dom Telford's second goal made it seven in nine games so far this season for the Newport striker

Dom Telford struck twice to give manager James Rowberry victory in his first game in charge of Newport County.

Despite losing skipper Matt Dolan early to injury, the Exiles took the lead at Bristol Rovers when Courtney Baker-Richardson slid home Jake Cain's cross.

Telford flicked in his first, but Brett Pitman's top-corner strike gave Rovers a lifeline moments before half-time.

Telford sealed victory from close range after being played in by Finn Azaz, the striker's seventh goal in nine games.

Newport manager James Rowberry said:

"I have to give a lot of credit to the staff and the players as a collective... it was a great experience, a great day.

"I can't say I massively enjoyed it because I was in the moment with it, but I'll enjoy it later because it was important to me to get off to a good start with the team.

"He (Telford) has been amazing and I've got to say and what a great lad. We've got a great group of individuals and all of them today were fantastic."
