Oli Shaw's gave Kilmarnock the lead but conditions worsened in the second half

Tommy Wright has been sacked by Kilmarnock in the aftermath of his side's Scottish Championship meeting with Dunfermline Athletic being abandoned due to fog.

The Ayrshire side remain five points adrift in the title race after the game was suspended in the 63rd minute, then called off by referee Craig Napier.

But Kilmarnock - who were relegated from the Scottish Premiership last May - have slipped out of the play-off places after a run of four defeats in their last five league games.

They led against Dunfermline on Saturday through Oli Shaw's early penalty, but Craig Wighton replied for the visitors before the game was halted.

In a statement, director Billy Bowie said the decision was taken "with regret" .

"I know how much Tommy wanted to bring success to Kilmarnock," he added. "Everyone at the club is under no illusions that promotion back to the Premiership is the number one target.

"With half of our league matches remaining as well as the upcoming January transfer window, our full focus is on appointing a new manager to achieve that goal."

'Results against top five were very poor' - reaction & analysis

Former Kilmarnock player Rory Loy: I know a lot of fans who weren't happy with how the side were playing. I think the remit for this season was win the league but their results against the other top five teams in the league have been very, very poor.

Former Scotland defender Willie Miller: I think club directors will be saying 'there's Dick Campbell at [part-time league leaders] Arbroath; look what he can do and you cant do it?'.

Former Scotland midfielder Michael Stewart: The crazy thing for me is the timing, off the back of an abandoned game, it makes me think the decision was already made prior to the game.
