Newport County missed the chance to close the gap on League Two's top three as visitors Salford City won 2-0.

Salford took the lead a minute before half time when Josh Morris' volley was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Finn Azaz.

And on 52 minutes the visitors had their second, Brandon Thomas-Asante calmly finishing with the left foot after good work from Jordan Turnbull.

Victory moves Salford up to 12th, while Newport remain in seventh with defeat.

Newport County manager James Rowberry said:

"We created enough chances to get something out of the game. The disappointing thing is we conceded goals through not winning enough first contact, second balls and winning tackles all over the pitch.

"We need to stick to what we're doing - how we're trying to play and how we're trying to build. We need to continue with that and we need to focus on that.

"It's just a stumbling block along the way that we need to get over quickly, and we will."
