Coventry City have signed defender Jake Bidwell on a free transfer from Championship rivals Swansea City.

The 28-year-old former Queens Park Rangers and Brentford player, who can play left-back or as a wing-back, has signed a deal which runs until 2025.

Bidwell was due to become a free agent this summer with his Swansea contract up at the end of the season.

"We are very pleased to welcome Jake to Coventry City," manager Mark Robins told the club website.

"He is an excellent defender who will get forward strongly, he has a lot of experience, having played nearly 450 games, including many at Championship level, and has a fantastic attitude too.

"Jake will add further quality to our squad at left wing-back, along with Ian Maatsen for the remainder of this season, a position in which we have not had different options."

Bidwell played 105 games, scoring three times, having joined Swansea on a free transfer in 2019 after he was released by QPR.

He was a reliable performer throughout his stint in Wales and made 19 appearances this season.

He was also linked with the likes of Birmingham City and Preston North End, but it is Coventry, who are ninth in the second tier, who have won the race for his signature.

Bidwell's exit leaves Swansea short of options on the left side of defence, and they could look to replace the former Everton youngster during the January transfer window.

Head coach Russell Martin has signed goalkeeper Andrew Fisher and defender Cyrus Christie this month, but is also keen to strengthen in midfield and attack.

MK Dons midfielder Matt O'Riley is high on Martin's list of targets, though Swansea would need to pay a seven-figure fee to land the 21-year-old.
