Northampton had also won 1-0 against Newport County at Rodney Parade last September.

Fraser Horsfall's late goal secured victory for Northampton in a tight game against promotion rivals Newport County.

Dom Telford had County's best chance but he was denied by Liam Roberts.

Ali Koiki blazed over the crossbar and Mitch Pinnock fired straight at Nick Townsend before the hosts broke the deadlock.

Horsfall headed home Pinnock's corner to secure the win which sees Northampton move up to third.

County drop down to seventh in the table after a second successive away defeat.

Newport manager James Rowberry:

"It's a disappointing result tonight - I think a draw would have been a fair reflection.

"They've had chances and we've had chances but to get done at a set play is disappointing.

"It's not ideal having two defeats on the bounce. We've played two teams in the top three/four so we've got to learn from our mistakes, move forward and get on with it."
