Manager Jim Goodwin has confirmed his interest in bringing former Scotland forward Leigh Griffiths to St Mirren.

The 31-year-old is a free agent after leaving Celtic at the end of his loan spell at Dundee, who offered him an "appearance-based" deal to stay on.

League One Falkirk are also in the mix, while St Mirren may need cover for Eamonn Brophy, who has suspected ankle ligament damage.

"We're waiting on scan results but it doesn't look great," said Goodwin.

"If it's going to be four or five weeks out then we'll go to the free agent market.

"He [Griffiths] is on the list. He's a free agent and I know there are a number of clubs who are speaking to him at the minute. We'll wait and see what comes from that."

Dundee boss James McPake has not closed the door on the striker returning to Dens Park.

"The offer we put to Leigh, it's between the player and the club what the figures are but the way the offer worked what I can go into is it was appearance-based," McPake explained.

"As a club that's what we felt we had to do. Leigh at the minute has decided against that or is mulling over it so we will see."

Griffiths signed a one-year contract extension with Celtic in the summer but the Glasgow club have brought that to a premature end. He scored three goals in 17 appearances for Dundee.

The former Wolves and Hibs player joined Celtic in 2014 and found the net 123 times in 261 games, winning seven league titles, three Scottish Cups and five League Cups.

He won the last of his 22 caps in November 2020 and scored four international goals, including a memorable free-kick double in a Hampden draw with England in June 2017.
