Inverness Caledonian Thistle are seven points off the top two in the Scottish Championship after losing at home to Ayr United.

Sean McGinty headed Ayr in front 10 minutes before half-time.

Tomi Adeloye struck the visitors' second before Inverness had David Carson sent off for two bookings midway through the second period.

Substitute Lewis Nicolson netted from a difficult angle to reduce the hosts' deficit but they could not get level.

Billy Dodds' Caley Thistle, without a win in nine, remain a point above Raith Rovers while Ayr climb two points clear of eight-placed Greenock Morton.

Inverness manager Billy Dodds: "It conspired against us today. We've had a few chances. I don't think we deserved to be 1-0 down at half-time.

"They get a goal second half and we find ourselves having to come from two behind. It's just not happening for us just now, but we'll keep going at it."

Ayr manager Lee Bullen: "We demanded more from the players at half-time. They came out and showed more of their true colours.

"The boys are in a good place mentally at the moment. We are making progress. Our feet are firmly planted. We know exactly where we are."
