Newport County's automatic promotion hopes suffered a setback as Hartlepool ended the Exiles' seven-match unbeaten run.

Ex-Cardiff striker Omar Bogle's own goal gave County the lead but the home side then lost their way.

Jamie Sterry's fine finish made it 1-1 before Luke Molyneux put the visitors ahead in first-half stoppage time.

Rob Street equalised for Newport but Neill Byrne sealed victory for Hartlepool two minutes later.

Victory would have seen County move up to second in League Two, while Hartlepool are 11th.

Newport County manager James Rowberry said:

"We need to defend better as a collective but we'll learn from it, dust ourselves down and go again.

"We've had a good period of games where we've got some decent results and put ourselves in a relatively good position.

"Games on a Friday night after a long trip to Carlisle are probably not ideal but we have to get on with it."
