Queen of the South's relegation from the Scottish Championship was confirmed after Ayr United came back to draw and boost their own survival hopes.
Euan East's 80th-minute strike looked as if it would take the relegation battle to the last day of the season.
But East's own goal seven minutes later took Ayr out of the bottom two and a point above Dunfermline Athletic.
Ayr are at home to promotion hopefuls Partick Thistle on Friday evening, while Dunfermline are hosting Queens.
Having lost to Partick at Firhill on Saturday, Dunfermline are on a goal difference of -16 and Ayr's stands at -15.
Queen of the South player-manager Willie Gibson: "We've been up against it for a number of weeks. That last goal is an absolute sickener. It's a real hard one to take.
"We can't dwell on it. All we can do is use this hurt and this pain to go again and make sure we don't feel the same way again."
Ayr United manager Lee Bullen: "The minimum we wanted to take from this was a point. It's all to play for next week.
"We've got a big fight on our hands to avoid the play-offs, but we know what we need to do now."
