Kieffer Moore scored a fourth late goal in his past three games after coming on as a second-half substitute for Bournemouth
Millwall's outside hopes of a Championship play-off place came to an end as they lost at promoted Bournemouth.
The Lions had to hope that they won, and Luton and Middlesbrough both lost on the final day, but the defeat ended their aspirations of extending their season.
Bournemouth's Emiliano Marcondes had a 63rd-minute goal disallowed for offside as Millwall struggled to create chances.
Kieffer Moore raced half the length of the field and blasted home to seal the win with nine minutes left for the Cherries, who end the season two points behind champions Fulham in second place.
Millwall went into the afternoon with hope after Luton's 7-0 thrashing by Fulham in midweek erased any goal difference advantage the Hatters had.
But the loss meant they finished the season in ninth place after Blackburn moved above them by virtue of their win at Birmingham City.
Bournemouth should have been ahead inside the first 20 minutes as Bartosz Bialkowski saved one-on-one from Marcondes after the Cherries midfielder had sprung the offside trap.
Despite having a decent amount of possession Millwall struggled to create chances and were relieved when Cherries' top scorer Dominic Solanke curled an effort wide late in the first period.
The Lions had a penalty appeal turned down 10 minutes after half-time when George Saville went down under a challenge from Nat Phillips.
Solanke should have put the Cherries ahead on the hour from Jordan Zemura's low cross, after a superb run down the left to the byeline, but the ball was just inches away from the one-time England striker.
Marcondes thought he had put the hosts ahead shortly after from a low shot just inside the penalty area, but Zemura jumped over the shot while in an offside position and was judged to be interfering with play.
Millwall eventually troubled Bournemouth with 17 minutes to go as Mark Travers saved Saville's effort from the edge of the box, while substitute Jed Wallace curled an effort wide on what could be his final appearance for the Lions.
Moore finally broke the deadlock after reacting to a quick Philip Billing throw-in which caught the Millwall defence napping, and the Devon-born Wales striker blasted home.
Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker told BBC Radio Solent:
"I'm immensely proud of the team with what we've done this year, we've finished two points behind a team that everyone has said have run away with it.
"To accumulate the points they've done, whether that is with what everyone believes is an incredible squad that should do it, the reality is you have to do it.
"Just like a lot of teams that we've seen have brilliant squads, it's difficult and you need something special and this group have that this year and hence why they've been promoted."
Millwall manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio London:
"It's difficult right now because of course you want to finish in the top six and we've not been able to do that.
"We knew the results weren't going for us, so it didn't really matter what our result was in the end.
"We switched off for a second, a great finish by Kieffer Moore, it just shows the quality to be able to bring someone like him on that has been a big factor in their promotion, and we couldn't quite do that.
"But we've had some good moments and it just wasn't meant to be today, but I'm proud of all the efforts.
"I think the players have achieved a lot this season, we've had the most wins, we've had the most points, we've had excellent home form, so there's so many positives and the staff and the players have really worked hard to take it to the last game."
