Wales Under-21s were denied a fine draw against the Netherlands as Lutsharel Geertruida headed in a late winner in their European Championship qualifier.

The Dutch dominated but, despite chances for Brian Brobbey and Quinten Timber, the first half ended goalless.

Wales defended doggedly and had their first shot after an hour as Luke Jephcott saw an effort saved.

Brobbey wasted a glorious close-range chance but, with four minutes left, Geertruida broke Wales' resistance.

The Netherlands' eighth victory from 10 matches sees them finish their qualifying campaign unbeaten as the winners of Group E.

Wales, whose qualification hopes had already gone, stay fifth.

It was a commendable display from Paul Bodin's side, who had won only two of their previous eight qualifiers.

Although possession and opportunities to attack were scarce against opponents boasting several players who feature regularly for top-flight clubs, this was arguably the highlight of Wales' campaign.

And when you consider the Netherlands won the reverse fixture 5-0, this was a result and performance to offer considerable encouragement.

Wales finish their campaign at home to bottom side Gibraltar on Tuesday, 14 June.
