The New Saints suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Icelandic champions Vikingur Reykjavík in the Europa Conference League.

Saints endured a difficult first half and Leo Smith's foul on Ari Sigurpálsson resulted in a penalty which Kristall Máni Ingason converted.

Ingason scored a second from the spot early in the second half after he was brought down by debutant Josh Pask.

It was a poor display from the Welsh double winners who created very little.

The sides meet again at Park Hall in the second leg next Tuesday, 26 July.

Saints dropped into the Europa Conference League after they were beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Linfield in the Champions League qualifiers.

Anthony Limbrick's side reached the competition's third qualifying round last season, eventually losing to Czech side Viktoria Plzen on penalties.

Víkingur were beaten by Malmo in the Champions League first qualifying round having come through the preliminary round.

The Icelandic champions are managed by former Bolton Wanderers, Leicester City, Stoke City and Dundee United striker Arnar Gunnlaugsson.
