Sutton United and Newport County shared the points on the opening day of the League Two season.
County keeper Nick Townsend saved Robert Milsom's free-kick before Sutton went ahead through Omar Bugiel after Will Randall's effort came back off the crossbar.
Omar Bogle levelled with a bullet header from Mickey Demetriou's throw.
Bogle and Robbie Willmott had opportunities for Newport in the second half.
Newport County manager James Rowberry said:
"I'm really pleased - it's a good start to the season and it's an improvement from last season when we came here and lost.
"They're a tough team to play against and I thought we dealt with it particularly well.
"I'm pleased for Omar to get the goal because he's been working hard and you could see how hard he's worked."
