Chanka Zimba celebrates Newport's second goal with fellow goalscorer Lewis Collins

Newport County produced another giant-killing act to knock Championship side Luton Town out of the EFL Cup.

James Waite struck the winner for the League Two side, who twice came from behind at Kenilworth Road.

Carlos Mendes Gomes had put Luton ahead with a long-range effort but Lewis Collins levelled six minutes later.

Tom Lockyer put the hosts in front after the break before Chanka Zimba equalised and Waite scored the winner 14 minutes from time.

Exiles keeper Joe Day made some crucial saves early on to deny Luke Berry and Admiral Muskwe, while Tom Lockyer fired wide.

But Day could do nothing to stop Mendes Gomes' powerful 30-yard strike, which put Luton ahead.

Newport responded and Collins slotted past Matt Macey to level after good work on the right by Aaron Lewis.

Luton restored their lead when Dion Pereira neatly played in Lockyer and the Wales defender chipped Day from a tight angle.

County once again hit back straight away with Zimba's first-time right-footed finish making it 2-2.

Newport pressed for a third and they were rewarded when Waite netted from close range after Zimba's shot came back off Macey.

Newport County assistant manager Carl Serrant said:

"We're so delighted. We made changes and showed the depth of our squad. Players have come in and done magnificently well and scored some great goals.

"We showed our quality throughout the game. First half we had a little bit of difficulty getting to grips with playing against a team who were in the Championship play-offs last season.

"We're so proud of our players."
