Keane Lewis-Potter scored his first Brentford goal as the Premier League team beat fourth-tier Colchester to reach the Carabao Cup third round.
The 21-year-old forward, signed from Hull City, was one of 11 changes for Thomas Frank's side and slotted home with the visitors' first shot on goal.
Mads Bech Sorensen sealed victory by netting the second in added time.
Colchester twice went close through Tom Dallison but were left to rue their missed chances.
Denmark international Mikkel Damsgaard was one of two Brentford players to be handed a debut, with goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha also making his first appearance for the club.
Lewis-Potter - making his first start - opened the scoring moments after Colchester went close to breaking the deadlock themselves through Dallison.
The League Two side, who made six changes, did well to contain Brentford for the most part and Dallison rose highest to meet a corner late on, but nodded wide.
That allowed the Bees to round off victory with a second - Sorensen turning in Ivan Toney's flick from a corner.
