Grimsby secured a return to League Two with victory in last season's National League play-off final

Bryn Morris and Harry Clifton's second half goals saw Grimsby Town end Newport's two game winning run in League Two.

Summer recruit Morris broke the deadlock in the final quarter, hitting the target from outside the box from Anthony Driscoll-Glennon's set-piece.

The Mariners doubled their lead as Clifton struck from inside the box.

Grimsby rose four places to ninth in the table with the Exiles dropping three spots to 17th.

Newport County manager James Rowberry told BBC Radio Wales Sport:

"Defensive errors cost us and not scoring goals where we should have scored goals.

"They [Grimsby] were really well organised and did a job on us in that sense today.

"As a group we need to look at what we can do better."
