Stevenage continued their impressive start to the season as they beat Newport County.

After a scrappy first half Alex Gilbey - playing against his former club - gave the hosts the lead three minutes after the break with a fine curling effort from the edge of the area.

Luke Norris and Jamie Reed both went close for Stevenage, who have made their best ever start to an EFL season.

Steve Evans' side remain second in League Two with County in 17th spot.

Newport County manager James Rowberry:

"In the first half we competed with their direct style, with them loading balls in the box and we dealt with that particularly well.

"We had a chance where normally we'd score and that changes the game in that sense.

"Then in the second half, three minutes in, we do something we haven't done all game and that's ultimately what's cost us, missing four first contacts off a direct ball and we've got to do better at it."
