Newport midfielder Nathan Moriah-Welsh doubled his goal tally for the season

Corey Whelan marked his 50th game for Carlisle United with the defender's first goal to earn a hard-fought draw at Newport County.

Nathan Moriah-Welsh had given the home side the lead when he flicked the ball past Tomas Holy after a mazy Thierry Nevers run.

But late in the second half Whelan stabbed home a Callum Guy corner.

Carlisle almost snatched a win but Paul Huntington saw his volley ping off the crossbar after another corner.

The draw did at least end Newport's run of four successive defeats, including three in League Two.

Newport manager James Rowberry said:

"There's a disappointed changing room in there, to concede the goal from a set play was bitterly disappointing.

"We probably didn't impose the game plan second half that we did first half, didn't compose ourselves enough with the ball.

"But on the flip side of it we've got a point and we've stopped those three league losses in a row, and we need to, we can and we will build upon this now. The aim is to give our fans something to shout about."
