Newport County upset the form book to end leaders Leyton Orient's unbeaten start to the League Two season.
Orient dominated the early stages, with Charlie Kelman hitting the bar and Paul Smyth testing keeper Nick Townsend.
Instead it was Newport who led when Will Evans headed in a corner, before he was fouled by Lawrence Vigouroux, with Omar Bogle scoring the penalty.
Aaron Drinan pulled one back for Orient when he poked home a Tom James free-kick that came back off the post.
The win was all the more remarkable as it ended a run of six games in league and cup without a win for Newport who climb to 16th in the table, while Orient's lead at the top is trimmed to two points.
Newport County manager James Rowberry said:
"Any win in this division is a big win for us, especially at this moment in time with the start that we've had, but I'm just delighted for the lads and the fans that have travelled today.
"It can be seen (as a big scalp) but I said to the lads in the changing room that... the thing to do now is not to get too comfortable, and we drive forward and get a positive result now on Tuesday against Swindon.
"I've said to them to enjoy it, and they will, but it's not exactly that they can go and have a few beers as we've got a game Tuesday and then Rochdale on Saturday - two important games for us."
