Manchester City's Kyle Walker has undergone successful surgery on a groin injury amid concerns the England defender could miss the World Cup.

Walker, 32, was substituted after 41 minutes in City's 6-3 victory over rivals Manchester United on 2 October.

However, BBC Sport understands Walker has a chance of making the tournament in Qatar depending on how the initial stages of his recovery go.

He has 70 caps for England but has just over six weeks to return to fitness.

City boss Pep Guardiola said after his side's 5-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen on Wednesday that he "does not know" if Walker will be fit for the World Cup.

"I know how important the World Cup is for the players but honestly I don't know right now," said Guardiola.

A statement from City, external said "a more detailed prognosis will be provided in due course".

The defender was named in England manager Gareth Southgate's latest squad in September for the Nations League defeat to Italy and the draw with Germany but missed City's third Champions League group stage match against Copenhagen.

The World Cup starts on 20 November with England's first game against Iran the following day.

Southgate will name a 26-player squad for the World Cup.
