Coventry's Viktor Gyokeres took his goal tally to six for the season with the winner at Watford

Viktor Gyokeres scored the only goal of the game as Coventry City ended Watford's three-game winning run with a hard-fought victory against the high-flying Hornets at Vicarage Road.

Gyokeres' first-time finish moments after Ken Sema went close for Watford at the other end proved decisive.

Ismaila Sarr was twice off target as Watford searched for an equaliser, while keeper Ben Wilson denied Joseph Hungbo a leveller in the last minute for a Hornets side who missed the chance to move back into the play-off spots.

Victory for Coventry, who only moved out of the relegation places on Tuesday when they upstaged another high-flyer in Blackburn, moves them up to 15th in the table.

Watford's Keinan Davis had the ball in the net after 21 minutes, but the on-loan Aston Villa forward's effort was ruled out for a foul on defender Kyle McFadzean in the build-up.

Wilson then made a good save to keep out a Sema free-kick, with the goalkeeper going on to foil Davis soon after, with Sarr scuffing the loose ball wide.

A desperate block from Francisco Sierralta took a Gyokeres effort wide for the hosts, who also saw a Ben Sheaf shot sail over the bar.

Just a minute after Sema fired wide for the hosts, Sweden forward Gyokeres got the goal his performance deserved, meeting Jamie Allen's cross to finish a move that started with good work from Kasey Palmer.

Sarr was wasteful as the hosts pressed for an equaliser and, after Sheaf had a shot dealt with for Coventry, Wilson made a crucial save from Hungbo to ensure the Sky Blues left Vicarage Road with maximum points.
